Socioeconomic status and livestock scenario of Spiti valley of Western Himalayas

Livestock rearing plays a cogent role in the economy of Himachal Pradesh, as it contributes about 28-30% ofthe total value agricultural produce. In study area, majority livestock farmers belonged to marginalcategory and were sheep, goat, local cattle, Churu Yak for their sustenance. The literacy rate areawas highest semi-medium followed by small marginal farmers. Study revealed that contribution oflivestock sector gross farmer’s income was case inadequateexposure improved breeding practices, scarcity green fodder poor marketing facilities themajor constraints production. this region adopting modern veterinarymedicines/vaccines treatment livestock; however, ethnoveterinary practices are still progress.In light results obtained, can be concluded socio-economic status thealpine area Lahaul Spiti is appreciable, though there multiple production practiceswhich directly affect animal health thus livelihood.
